When Lois Moiseeff headed to Kaiser Permanente (KP)’s brand-new San Francisco Medical Center seven decades ago, she had no idea the stir it would cause. But on February 17, 1954, Lois’s daughter, Cheri, became the first person born at the hospital. To celebrate the birth, a KP administrator presented Lois and Cheri with a silver cup that highlighted the maternity ward’s nickname, the “Heirport.” “It was a big surprise,” Lois, now 91, recalled. “I felt like a celebrity for 10 minutes.” Some things are less surprising: Even 70 years ago, KP’s cutting-edge technology set the standard for patient care, particularly the innovative “baby in a drawer” system, which revolutionized breast feeding in the post-World War II era. “They were ahead of anybody,” Lois said. “They were just terrific.”
