Background: Optimal sleep health is essential for all areas of children’s functioning and health. Children from urban and Latino backgrounds are at high risk for shorter sleep duration. Stressors related to urban poverty (e.g., neighborhood noise) and sociocultural experiences (e.g., discrimination) can disproportionately affect Latino children and challenge family sleep practices and outcomes. To date, there are no interventions designed to enhance sleep behaviors in urban Latino children. Project SIESTA (School Intervention to Enhance Latino Students Time Asleep) was developed to improve sleep hygiene and outcomes in urban Latino middle school students in Providence, RI and San Juan, Puerto Rico. It involves a sleep environmental assessment and behavioral sleep approach through 4 student group sessions at school, 2 home visits with child-caregiver dyads, and 2 phone calls with caregivers over 6 weeks.

Objective: This study aims to describe the adaptation of this program for remote delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic and its preliminary efficacy on Latino middle school students’ sleep hygiene via a pilot randomized control trial (RCT).

Design/Methods: Project SIESTA involved the cultural and contextual refinement and testing of the intervention via a pilot RCT. The trial compared sleep hygiene outcomes in the SIESTA and attention control groups. Adapting in-person sessions to virtual required consideration of families’ engagement, technological capabilities, and comfort. Adaptations focused on the content of the intervention sessions (e.g., enhancing participant engagement, adapting activities to remote format) and delivery procedures (e.g., assessing COVID exposure and access to technology).

Results: Participants in the pilot RCT (N=31) completed the Child Sleep Hygiene Scale (caregiver report) and Adolescent Sleep Wake Scale (child self-report) at baseline, end of treatment (EOT), and 4-month follow-up. Scores were compared across groups with percentage of improvement between time points and effect size changes. The SIESTA group reported significantly greater improvement in sleep hygiene from baseline to EOT and follow-up than those in the attention control group (see Table 1). The tailored intervention met all of the cultural and contextual refinement goals.

Conclusion(s): Findings demonstrate preliminary efficacy of the remote delivery of SIESTA in improving Latino middle school students’ sleep hygiene. Effect size estimates and feasibility data will inform the development of a full-scale RCT in both sites to improve sleep hygiene and outcomes of a larger group of Latino children.
