Session
Description: Advancing Shared Decision Making Research Using Qualitative Methods The growing interest in shared decision making (SDM) as a tool to improve patient care necessitates higher quality research to advance the field. In this relatively understudied area, qualitative methods are a powerful tool to build a robust understanding of patient, family, and provider experiences to inform the provision of high quality SDM in clinical practice. This session blends a symposium-style series of talks on cutting edge research in SDM with didactics on SDM and qualitative research methods and concludes with an experiential small-group exercise that will culminate in potential future projects in SDM using qualitative methods.
The session will start with brief didactics on the state of SDM research and an overview of qualitative research methods. Then, 3 speakers will present their individual qualitatively-grounded research in SDM. In between speaker presentations, a moderator will facilitate interactive discussion and Q&A amongst the speakers and a qualitative research expert focused on the application of qualitative methods and the next steps for SDM research. After open Q&A, participants will work in breakout groups to design a qualitative research study about SDM. Each breakout table will have a family partner and qualitative expert to provide insight. The session will conclude with open sharing of research designs. The last part of the session will be dedicated towards business meetings for the individual SIGs.
