Session
Description: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) use in pediatrics is rapidly expanding, especially in the acute care setting (emergency department, urgent care, inpatient medicine, pediatric clinic sick visits) and among sub-specialists. In this Hot Topic Symposium, several POCUS applications that have the potential to reduce or eliminate the clinician’s reliance on plain radiographs will be presented. We will present both high acuity and low acuity applications; each are relevant to everyday practice of pediatricians.
Our session will consist of several "lightning" presentations on each application with time for audience participation in image review. These presentations will be followed by a Q&A session with a panel of experts. Our goal is for participants to have a better understanding of the growing list of POCUS applications that may reduce ionizing radiation use in children. Participants will learn the indication of each POCUS application, evidence for its use, basic technique and identification of common findings, as well as considerations for implementation in clinical practice. Audience participation will be encouraged through e-polling quizzes to assess knowledge acquisition and time set aside for participants' questions. Four applications traditionally evaluated by plain radiographs will be discussed: lung (pneumonia, pneumothorax, intubation confirmation), knee and hip (effusions), abdomen (constipation and small bowel obstruction), and foreign body identification (skin/soft tissue, esophageal). Following these presentations, we will conclude with a panel discussion of how to implement these applications into practice, including audience Q&A. Panelists will address pearls and pitfalls of using POCUS in lieu of radiographs.
