Session
Description: Brief Description of Overall Session:
This session will discuss the evidence and changes in approach to providing intravenous fluids. It will provide latest evidence supporting choice of fluids both during resuscitation and for maintenance. It will discuss potential need to personalize approaches in some scenarios.
1.Topic/title: What a long strange trip it’s been. The history and data supporting isotonic fluid for “maintenance” IVF therapy.
Objective: Discuss the history and evidence behind the decisions about IVF choices. Discuss if there are complications such as hypertension, hypernatremia related to NS, isotonic vs. hypotonic solutions. Understand the path that led to the adoption of the American Academy of Pediatrics Clinical Practice Guideline: Maintenance Intravenous Fluids in Children
2. Topic/title: There is nothing “normal” about saline. Is it time to transition to balanced electrolyte solutions for “maintenance” IVF ?.
Objective: Understand the implications and side effects of utilizing normal saline as maintenance IVF. Discuss the potential benefit of utilizing balanced electrolyte solutions as “maintenance” IVF therapy.
3. Topic/title: Resuscitation fluid composition and their impact on outcomes
Objective: Discuss the controversies about the ideal resuscitation fluid with discussion about the impact of resuscitation IVF choice on outcomes.
4. Topic/Title: What are we teaching learners about maintenance?
Objective: Understanding the impact of the transition to isotonic fluids for “maintenance” IVF on learners understanding of maintenance IVF including composition, sodium requirements, side effects.
