Description: Brief Description of Overall Session: This session will seek to review the complex interactions between liver and kidney disease. The session will begin with an overview and update of primary diseases that impact the liver and kidney. The session will then transition into the short-term and long-term management of children with liver disease from a nephrologist’s perspective including: AKI, hepatorenal syndrome, extracorporeal therapies for acute liver failure, and managing children after liver transplant.
1. Topic/title: An update on diseases that impact the kidneys and liver
Objective: Understand new advancements in the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of hepatorenal diseases
2. Topic/title: Acute kidney injury and hepatorenal syndrome in children with liver disease
Objective: Understand the epidemiology and risk factors for AKI in children with liver disease, understand management of AKI in pediatric liver disease including therapies for hepatorenal syndrome
3. Topic/title: Extracorporeal therapies for the management of acute liver failure
Objective: Understand the indications and efficacy of extracorporeal liver support systems (CRRT, MARS, plasmapheresis)
4. Managing patients with liver transplant: From the OR to CKD
Objective: Review kidney related complications and management throughout the course of liver transplantation
