Description: Stress is on everyone’s mind but in no one’s medical record. The landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences study sparked a wave of research demonstrating a link between childhood adversity and long-term mental and physical health outcomes including but not limited to asthma, ADHD, learning and behavior issues, addiction, anxiety, and depression. Research highlights toxic stress, the prolonged activation of the stress response system and subsequent disruptions of neuroendocrine, immune, and genetic function, as an underlying mechanism by which childhood adversity gets “under the skin.” While many agree that childhood adversity is a public health crisis, there is less clarity on how to translate population level research data into clinical practice. In this roundtable a panel of translational researchers and clinicians will explore how understanding the science of the stress physiology can provide an opportunity for developing novel diagnostic tools and treatment strategies for healing toxic stress and preventing long-term health issues.
George Slavich PhD will highlight his cellular research examining stress physiology and biomarkers. Rachel Gilgoff MD will discuss the clinical translation, providing the science on safe and promising clinical interventions for toxic stress. Robin Ortiz MD MPH will discuss structural and environmental implications of toxic stress and provide a health equity and community level framework. Devika Bhushan MD MPH will describe lessons learned from California policy and the ACEs Aware Initiative advancing universal ACE screening in primary care. Together, this panel will offer a path for incorporating stress biology on multiple levels: cellular, individual, dyad, family, community, policy and society.
