Session
Description: Aparna Bole, MD, FAAP, is a pediatrician who, in her role as Special Expert in the Office of the Director at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, serves as part of the Health and Human Services Office of Climate Change and Health Equity’s leadership team. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH, and is interested in the intersection between environmental stewardship, environmental justice, and pediatric public health. She is the immediate past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health and Climate Change, and a former co-chair of the Healthcare Without Harm board of directors. She has previously served in numerous other environmental health leadership roles, including as a member of the State of Ohio’s Lead Advisory Council, , the Trust for Public Land’s Ohio Advisory Council, and the Ohio Environmental Council’s board of directors.
This session will detail the hazards of ambient and indoor air pollution that affect children's health. Air pollution causes and exacerbates climate change, and climate change worsens health effects of air pollution. Infants and children are uniquely sensitive to air pollution, because their organs are developing and they have higher minute ventilation. Health effects linked to air pollution include respiratory disease but also preterm birth, low birth weight, neurodevelopmental disorders, IQ loss, pediatric cancers, and increased risks for adult chronic diseases. We will discuss individual, community, and legislative strategies to mitigate air pollution.
