Description: Literature has identified child health and developmental inequities by race/ethnicity. However, race is a social construct resulting in many misconceptions regarding the mechanisms underlying these inequities. Frequently, inequities are considered alone rather than part of a larger system of structural racism and discrimination. Commonly lacking from models are modifiable protective factors, such as social support, neighborhood cohesion, and racial identity and socialization, that can be addressed through changes in practice and policy development and implementation. Multiple social and environmental factors contribute to child health outcomes. Using an example from child development, participants will explore the complex relationships between these elements, with a focus on family stressors and protective factors. Participants will critique a new model of caregiver scaffolding behavior, which directly influences child cognitive and social-emotional development. The model was adapted from previous models of cumulative stressors yet can be further modified for other child health and developmental outcomes A multidisciplinary team of experts will present the model, discuss policy implications, discuss the relevance of the model to improving child health and developmental outcomes, and engage the audience in an interactive discussion.
