Session
Description: Many transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse (TNG) youth experience a combination of gender dysphoria (distress over one’s body not matching one’s gender identity) and anti-trans stigma and discrimination. Many healthcare providers in endocrinology, adolescent medicine, and general pediatrics are caring for increasing numbers of TNG youth. There are, however, many challenges to delivering high-quality health care for TNG youth: (1) few pediatric providers have received education or training in this area; (2) a combination of anti-trans stigma and discrimination from society, including legislative discrimination; and (3) limited opportunities to collaborate with other experienced providers about complex cases. This international conference environment provides a unique opportunity to bring individuals with diverse perspectives together to discuss challenging cases with other providers from across specialities and across the globe. This session will use a case-based format to facilitate a dialogue between providers who have existing clinical experience caring for TNG youth. It is our hope that this collaboration and the opportunity to engage with members of a multidisciplinary expert panel will provide attendees an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills to manage medically complex TNG adolescents in their clinical practice. Success metrics would include: tracking number of attendees (outcomes: total number, different specialities represented, different levels of training represented) as well as pre and post-session assessments to assess changes in provider knowledge, attitudes and skills. This proposal is supported by the Executive Committee for the AAP Section on LGBT Health and Wellness.
