Session
Description: Pharmacogenetics is a critical component of precision medicine and evidence for incorporating pharmacogenetics into clinical practice in pediatrics is growing rapidly. Many institutions are interested in the implementation of pharmacogenetic testing but may not know which of the different models of implementation to use or which key stakeholders to include. In this session, we will provide an introduction to pharmacogenetics and the types of available pharmacogenetic tests in pediatrics (e.g. single gene testing, multigene testing, or sequencing-based tests). Then, three different speakers with various training backgrounds will discuss their institutions’ models of implementing pharmacogenetic testing and how their roles are critical to the success of their pharmacogenetics services: 1) A pharmacist will discuss her role in outpatient primary care and subspecialty clinics where pharmacogenetic testing is implemented. 2) A clinician will describe her role in the GOLDILOKS inpatient consult service that provides dose individualization and clinical optimization using pharmacogenetic testing and other individual factors in hospitalized children. 3) A clinical pharmacologist will describe her role in a pharmacogenetic service that provides testing for all children admitted to the inpatient psychiatry unit with pre-defined recommendation templates for clinicians. The remaining 20 minutes of the session will be Q&A, moderated by a pediatric hospitalist and clinical pharmacologist, to allow audience members to learn more about the different types of models of pharmacogenetic implementation. By the end of the session, participants should recognize that a multidisciplinary team that includes bedside clinicians, pharmacists, and pharmacologists, is needed for successful implementation of pharmacogenetic testing.
