Workshop
Description: The field of pediatrics has long been rooted in the tradition of advocacy. More than ever, in today’s environment of widespread health misinformation, pediatricians serve as a trusted source for health information and a voice advocating for the needs of communities. Formal training in forming meaningful community partnerships and advocating for the needs of our communities is an integral part of the development of pediatricians and is mandated by the ACGME, however, there is wide variation in the implementation of Community Pediatrics and/or Advocacy curricula across institutions. In this interactive workshop, participants will be guided through creating a needs assessment for their institution’s current Community Pediatrics and/or Advocacy curriculum and identify three concrete actions to evolve their curriculum. The session will begin with audience polling and a discussion of the current state of advocacy curricula (traditional rotation and X+Y models). Participants will be introduced to SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis and apply this framework to assess their institution’s current advocacy educational offerings. Participants will collaborate in small groups and large group debriefs to identify innovations in advocacy training. Ultimately, participants will leave the workshop with a short-term goal and three concrete, actionable items to bring change to their home institution’s advocacy curriculum, in addition to curated resources for advocacy education development
