Workshop
Description: Personal storytelling and listening are foundations of human connection, uniquely important for trust-building, and highly valued in minority communities that suffer health disparities associated with structural racism. In this engaging workshop, we will review the key components of Digital Storytelling, ethical considerations, and its applications in health promotion. Furthermore, we will guide attendees through the process of creating and sharing a personal narrative and help them identify an implementation possibility in clinical or other professional settings to build trust in science and improve health equity. First, we will use Kahoot!® to understand attendees’ backgrounds, assess their experience with Digital Storytelling, and gauge their interests. Next, Dr. Fiddian-Green will review key components of the digital storytelling method, share an example story, and discuss relevant ethical considerations. Then, Mr. Weinshenker will guide attendees through a mini-workshop, beginning with a self “check-in” via poetry. Next, in roundtable small groups, attendees will share their motivation for attendance and reflect on their “check-in.” Afterwards, Mr. Weinshenker will prompt attendees to reflect on “Small Heroes” that helped them build trust in science or address inequities during the past year. Participants will then have 15 minutes for storytelling and listening in roundtable groups. Dr. Williams and Ms. Johnson will reconvene the large group, describing their partnership to co-create Digital Stories that build trust in influenza vaccines and reduce vaccination disparities. Then, attendees will pair up, reflect on the workshop, commit to an implementation plan, and develop an accountability plan. We will end with time for Q&A.
