Workshop
Description: Addressing a paucity of training in multilingual research methods, we propose a workshop to provide child health researchers with pragmatic skills to recruit and engage children and families who speak Languages Other than English (LOE). In the US, approximately 16% of children have at least one parent who does not speak English well enough to communicate fully during health or clinical research encounters. Among Asian and Latino children, this number rises to 44%. However, less than one-in-ten clinical research protocols includes participants who speak LOE. Further, the proportion of protocols with English-language requirements is rising. By offering pragmatic training in selected multilingual research methods, this workshop will provide participants with tools, strategies, and knowledge necessary to design and manage child health research inclusive of LOE.
The workshop will begin with foundational concepts about language and multilingual research, as well as briefly summarizing literature on the ethical, scientific, and practical arguments for inclusion. Subsequently, we will break into small groups for facilitated, hands-on activities to teach practical approaches to multilingual research, including selecting and applying a translation strategy, incorporating language-related tasks into a study timeline, and budgeting. We will then reconvene as a larger group for an interactive discussion. Dialogue will create space for attendees to network, explore, and collectively problem-solve challenges in multilingual research.
