Workshop
Description: As the national climate points to challenges, misinformation, and confusion around gender diversity and LGBTQIA+ health disparities, attention to compassion, humanistic, and inclusive care for LGBTQIA+ patients and families becomes more paramount. Larger organizations such as the Human Rights Coalition (HRC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have resources meant to guide clinical practices and environments towards more inclusive efforts.
This workshop introduces frameworks and needs assessments for creating a more friendly practice towards sexual and gender minorities (SGM). Through a group think tank exercise, participants will discuss and create practical implementation plans to different parts of the "AAP Pediatrician's Guide to creating an LGBTQIA+ friendly practice" for the inpatient setting. Facilitators will then guide attendees through an examination of barriers and examples of successful initiatives. Participants will further learn about the HRC corporate equality index to examine gaps and opportunities in their individual institutions and practices. By the end of the workshop, facilitators will help participants build plans to propel their individual organizations, practices, or groups into more LGBTQIA+ friendly environments.
