Workshop
Description: Threats to professional well-being in academic medicine are a growing concern. Shanafelt et.al defined the term “Career-Fit” as an alignment of assigned professional activities with meaningful work. That research as well as the research done by the Academic Pediatric Association Well-Being and Resiliency Task Force in 2019 highlighted the importance of assigned time to meaningful work in the context of provider well-being.
We will begin the workshop by introducing the concept of Career-Fit and highlighting its importance as a framework for promoting well-being. Participants will then apply these concepts as they complete a “Career-Appraisal Worksheet” that calculates their Career-Fit Score, and reflect upon their own Career-Fit. We will then have our senior workshop leaders share their own processes of identifying and achieving their ideal Career-Fit. Next, workshop leaders will facilitate small-group discussions using motivational interviewing prompts to (1) further explore what constitutes meaningful work and participants’ ideal Career-Fit, and (2) discuss barriers and facilitators to achieving that ideal Career-Fit. We will then regroup to share ideas from small-group conversations and identify common themes as well as strategies to achieve better Career-Fit. The workshop will close with time for each participant to reflect and identify 3 next steps on their journey towards Career-Fit over the next 12 months. Lastly, we will discuss how participants can utilize this framework in their home institutions as well as share the effectiveness of strategies employed by participants after the conference.
