Workshop
Description: What are your first thoughts when you are asked to assume a new leadership role within your organization? Whether you are asked to become a medical director, lead a research collaborative, or oversee a community project, how confident do you feel?” To engage as a leader, one must be able to convey confidence through “leadership presence.” If you feel like an imposter, this may affect your ability to “show up” for success. The imposter syndrome may be more common for women and underrepresented individuals because of microaggressions or marginalization. Threats to one’s identity may come from bias, discriminatory experiences and institutional structures that create an unwelcoming environment. However, it is important to recognize that others’ perceptions of behaviors, habits, and appearances may impact a leader’s effectiveness.
During this workshop, participants will learn about leadership presence and examine how the ability to convey a strong sense of oneself allows others to see you as a leader who can make a difference. Through skill building exercises, participants will explore how to acknowledge their unique strengths and combat self-doubt in order to showcase their capabilities as a leader. Using small group discussion and dyad practice, participants will the five behavioral traits associated with leadership presence.
Workshop leaders are senior academic pediatric leaders with diverse backgrounds who will share their own experiences and provide feedback throughout the workshop. By the end of the workshop, participants will be empowered and ready to implement specific strategies to enhance their presence and impact as a leader.
