Workshop
Description: Mentorship provides value to career satisfaction, progress, and achievement. The traditional mentorship model has evolved beyond the mentor/mentee dyad to include multiple mentors within a developmental network. A developmental network includes multiple relationships (including peers) that may be reciprocal and draws from within and outside of one’s organization. Developmental networks should also include a wide range of individuals with a variety of viewpoints, experiences, and strengths. This diverse network forms the basis of career and psychosocial support that underpin academic success. However, structural racism creates barriers impacting social segregation, how social capital is defined and valued, and limits network diversity. Acknowledging and addressing these barriers is critical to promoting equitable access to developmental networks.
In this interactive workshop, participants will describe key components of developmental networks and explore how peer mentors can be leveraged to promote scholarship and foster professional advancement. Through small and large group activities, participants will create a schematic of their own network, identify potential impacts of peer mentoring on an academic career and brainstorm strategies to engage a diverse range of peer mentors within and outside of their home institution. Participants will reflect on challenges presented by structural racism as they analyze current strengths and gaps in their own developmental networks and work with peers in small groups to identify growth opportunities. Workshop facilitators will share examples of resources to fill mentorship gaps. Before the workshop’s conclusion, participants will commit to an action plan to promote academic advancement, diversity and inclusive excellence within their developmental network.
