Session
Description: Are Pediatric Clinical Practice Guidelines in Crisis? Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) are increasingly defining quality standards for pediatric practice. However, questions remain regarding who should create the guidelines, how they should be funded and how frequently they should be updated. It is also unclear whether CPGs change medical practice or improve the quality of care. Many institutions now develop internal guidelines specific to their local settings, creating a patchwork of different recommendations across institutions. Finally, there has been significant controversy regarding the use of race and ethnicity within CPGs. In this session a group of experts will discuss the benefits and pitfalls of CPG development and implementation as well as ongoing controversies.
Agenda:
-Introduction & General overview
-Current State of Pediatric Clinical Practice Guidelines
-Do CPGs Improve the Quality of Pediatric Care?
-Local Pathway Development: Pros, Cons and Potential for Collaboration
-Use of Race and Ethnicity in CPGs
-Panel Discussion
-Concluding remarks and future directions
