Session
Description: Our field, and medicine at large, has reached a critical juncture. After decades of research on the social determinants of health (SDOH), policies and professional guidelines are transforming how we deliver pediatric care. Social needs screening and innovative programs are being integrated into academic and community-based primary care clinics, subspecialty practices, emergency departments, inpatient units and intensive care settings. This trend will undoubtedly increase with new 2023 requirements for health-related social needs screening from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Joint Commission and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). As we move forward, new and current programs must be informed by rigorous research conducted in collaboration with patients, families and community-based organizations. Careful attention should be paid to eliminating bias and ensuring equitable access to screening and resource provision. In this session, Dr. Laura Gottlieb, Director of Social Interventions Research Evaluation Network (SIREN), will deliver a keynote address followed by four top abstracts presented by early and mid-career investigators leading SDOH research. A networking breakout session will follow shortly thereafter from 10:00am – 11:00am to provide space for conversation and spur collaboration for SDOH researchers, clinicians, educators, and advocates. All are welcome!
