Session
Description: In 2016, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)’s strategic planning committee identified behavioral mental health (BMH) as the critical gap in pediatric training. Since that time, the ABP Foundation and the Association of Pediatric Program Directors have worked to address gaps in pediatric residency and fellowship training, including includes a focus on infants, children, adolescents, and young adults (hereafter “children”) with newly identified or ongoing chronic conditions and their families.
This symposium will share data recently collected from graduating residents, fellows, and subspecialists 1-3 years post training around training gaps in assessing and treating BMH conditions. It will also discuss two current demonstration projects: (1) the EMPOWER project, which is evaluating use of a novel BMH residency training curriculum coupled with faculty development based on the ECHO coaching model, and (2) the Roadmap Project, a combined change package and learning collaborative focused on training for residents, fellows, and faculty to enhance the resilience and emotional health of children with chronic conditions and their families.
This session will begin with an overview of the gaps in pediatric training and practice in the area of BMH identified by recent research, followed by presentations on the EMPOWER and Roadmap projects. Lessons learned about implementation barriers and facilitators for implementing curricular change will be shared. We will end the session with 20 minutes of interactive audience participation in brainstorming critical levers to improve BMH training and, ultimately, practice.
