Session
Description: Two years after the start of the pandemic, workforce shortages, supply chain disruption, high inflation, and state budget deficits have increased operational costs at academic children’s hospitals. These increased expenses have not been met with increased revenue or clinical volume. The American Hospital Association projects >50% of all United States’ hospitals will end 2022 in deficit.
The effect on the clinical and research missions of academic institutions from this loss of income has not been fully explored. Also underestimated is the impact poor moral, “quiet quitting,” and burnout have on financial productivity in pediatric healthcare. Academic pediatricians must understand the nature of how the pandemic impacted hospital finances and identify opportunities to advocate on behalf of their academic work. This hot topic session will aim to educate pediatric clinicians and researchers about the financial crisis, the dollar-impact of associated effects such as provider moral and burn out and will aim to highlight the importance of advocating for more resources for pediatric care and research.
This symposium will feature five speakers who will discuss the following:
1) 0-5minutes: Introduction to current financial crisis facing U.S Hospitals—Abdallah Dalabih
2) 5-25minutes: Financial crisis effect on the clinical mission of large academic institutions—Derek Wheeler
3) 25-45minutes: Financial crisis effect on the academic mission of large academic institutions–Rick Barr
4) 45-60minutes: Financial crisis effect on the moral and burnout of providers in large academic institutions-Ndidiamaka L Musa
