Description: Maternal or parent milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition, yet it is not available to all infants and much about its composition is unknown. Although most families now choose breastfeeding as their initial feeding plan, many do not achieve their lactation goal. Low milk supply is a common problem especially when maternal metabolic disease is present. Milk supply is a complex interplay of mammary gland development, hormonal signals, and milk removal behaviors all of which may be affected by metabolic health. Additionally, although studies are scant, metabolic health appears to impact milk bioactive concentrations and this bioactive variability may influence infant growth and body composition. In this 2023 Milk Club chaired by Drs. Sarah Keim and Sarah Taylor, we will delve into the existing evidence into how metabolic disease relates to both the lactation experience and milk bioactives. Dr. Laurie Nommsen-Rivers, Associate Professor of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Cincinnati College of Allied Health Sciences, will share her investigation into how low milk supply relates to hormonal signals and milk removal behaviors for women with obesity and diabetes mellitus. Dr. Brigid Gregg, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Michigan, will highlight newly discovered milk bioactives and how they relate to metabolic phenotypes.
