Session
Description: A post graduate course focusing on the implementation of genomic care in newborns and the available clinical, translational and research opportunities. The course will cover the entire spectrum of applications of genomic medicine in newborns. In addition to an overview, we will cover various aspects of genomics including need for rapid sequencing, cost-effectiveness, genetic basis of various neonatal conditions, implementation experience in the NICU, and ethical, legal, social implications and issues of diversity and equity. The topics will include: 1. An overview of the genomic care in newborns by Dr. Pankaj Agrawal; 2. Rapid genome sequencing and cost effectiveness by Dr. Nathaly Sweeney; 3.Southseq, a NIH-funded study of sequencing newborns by Dr. Bruce Korf; 4. Implementing genomic care in a Level 4 NICU by Dr. Tara Wenger; 5. Blessings and pitfalls of genetic testing in Newborns by Dr. Rita Ryan; 6. Role of genomic sequencing in newborn screening by Dr. Ingrid Holm; 7. Genetic basis of cardiac defects by Dr. Sarah Morton; 8. Genetic basis of neonatal lung conditions and Gene therapy approach to genetic surfactant deficiency by Dr. Jennifer Wambach; 9. Genetic basis of prematurity by Dr. Lou Muglia; 10. Ethical, social and legal implications in implementing newborn genomic care by Dr. Monica Wojcik and 11. Resolving racial, equity and diversity issues in genomics by Dr. Tamora Lewis.
