Workshop
Description: Educator portfolios (EPs) showcase the ethos, style, and scholarly work of medical educators for the purposes of promotion, award applications, and networking. Professional societies encourage medical educators to create EPs and provide general guidelines for doing so, yet it can be challenging to design a high-impact portfolio that highlights the uniqueness of one’s career. In this workshop, we will introduce attendees to the goals of EPs, provide options for organizational frameworks grounded in the competency domains of medical educators (e.g., teaching, curriculum design, assessment, mentoring, research, and administration), and feature tools for creating E-Portfolios. Attendees will outline their objectives for creating EPs and will select the organizational structure best suited to achieve them. We will brainstorm ways to demonstrate the theory, impact, and reflective critique that underpin scholarship in medical education, helping attendees incorporate Fincher and Simpson’s application of Glassick’s Criteria for Scholarship into their EPs. Attendees will explore E-Portfolios as a tool that enhances the display, dissemination, and reflective critique of their educational scholarship beyond the reach of word-processed documents. Before the workshop, attendees will select one competency and prepare materials supporting that domain. Attendees should bring a charged electronic device to the workshop for small group work, when they will form teams according to their chosen competency domains with instructions to create a component of their E-Portfolio and participate in peer feedback. We will distribute checklists outlining the key steps for creating EPs to guide attendees to complete their E-Portfolios after the workshop ends.
