Workshop
Description: This workshop will discuss the integration of new models of screening and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in young children form diverse backgrounds in primary care. It is a very interactive workshop that will utilize case discussions, and videos. We will review early signs of ASD, Level 1 and Level 2 screening measures that help triage and identify autism concerns in children under 3 years of age. We will demonstrate the administration and scoring of each measure in small groups and score and review few videos demonstrating the administration of a level 2 interactive screening test for ASD in young children. We will present clinical cases to discuss in groups, formulate diagnostic observations based on DSM-5 ASD criteria and observational measures. We will review successful screening and diagnostic report writing and billing. We will identify and discuss cultural factors and perspectives that may affect early diagnosis of ASD through videos, and interviews of families culturally diverse and of community cultural brokers and resources . In addition, we will identify system issues based on different clinical settings such as private practice, academic setting or community health center and analyze the role of professionally diverse providers in different models. By end of the workshop, participants will analyze screening and diagnostic measures, evaluate different models for their clinical setting, and identify cultural factors that affect early ASD diagnosis. We will further develop and create cultural, screening and diagnostic resources, templates and websites for common sharing and use.
