Session
Description: Currently, enteral feedings for very preterm infant(VPI)s are initiated earlier, i.e. within 12 hours of life, because nutrition, especially enteral nutrition, is recognized as an important factor for short and long-term outcomes of VPIs. In this session, the first half will be focused on the current situation of neonatal nutrition in Japan.
In Japan, JASMINE (JApanese Study of an Exclusive Human MIlk Diet in Premature NEonates) trial has been conducted since Oct. 2021. The interim report will be shared with the audience from Dr. Mizuno. Enteral feeding during early postnatal days often rely on donor human milk (DHM). In Japan, Human Milk Bank (HMB) launched in May, 2017. We continue to have some problems with access to DHM and HMB. Dr. Wada will talk about the questionnaire survey for Japanese neonatologists and registry findings for VPIs who used DHM in Japan. Dr. Nakano will talk about nutrition during early postnatal life and future risks of non-communicable diseases in VPI.
The second half will be focused on the same topics as above from other countries.
Dr. Hair (Texas Children's Hospital) has published the benefits of Exclusive Human Milk-based Diet, such that she would share her results relating to JASMINE.
Dr. Chua ( KK Women's and Children's Hospital) launched the first HMB in Singapore in 2017. Therefore, we can share the issues in HMB regarding establishment, accessibility, cost, and so on. Dr. Patole (University of Western Australia will talk about the benefits of the standardization of enteral nutrition for VPIs.
