Workshop
Description: Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography (TnECHO) is increasingly recognized as a useful tool in the assessment of hemodynamic status and management in neonates. Widespread application of TnECHO has been hampered by several obstacles including the limited opportunity for neonatologists to learn the skill, and the need for extensive hands-on training to acquire the skills. We will have 15 mannequin-based haptic echocardiographic simulators capable of simulating a full range of neonatal 2D, color flow Doppler, spectral Doppler, and M-mode echocardiography views. The simulator screen displays the full range of echocardiography images and the side screen displays the position and motion of the cutting planes through a three-dimensional heart model. The system includes a software module to perform hemodynamic measurements from specific video clip images. Learners will be introduced to the standard echocardiographic views with a hands-on approach using the simulator. Subsequently, the participants will learn how to visualize a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), assess the flow direction, and assess for pulmonary hypertension, including assessment of flow across patent foramen ovale (PFO). The learner will then practice a case of Term Newborn with hypoxemic respiratory failure with acute PH and changes in shunts through a PDA and or PFO before and after pulmonary vasodilator therapy. The workshop comprises a 30-minute introduction and review of the standard views and Two 30-minute hands-on practice sessions. Each simulator will be used by 3 learners and 90 learners can participate. Leaders and Co-Leaders have extensive experience in using TnECHO and managing newborns with acute PH.
