Session
Description: Finding the Joy in Academic Medicine During this combined Faculty Development and Wellbeing and Vitality SIG meeting, we will help participants find joy and meaning in medicine through various exercises and introduction to skills that will help improve the work climate at attendees’ institutions. We will examine the virtue of joy and discuss in dyads ways we experience joy in our workday and at home and share literature on factors which foster joy in medicine. We will then share tools, (savoring and gratitude, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Framework for Improving Joy at Work) which will be applied to improving joy at work. Next, we will explore finding meaning in work, a key factor in maintaining resilience in the healthcare field. We will practice ‘Appreciative Inquiry’ to deepen the engagement of learners and fellow faculty. We will also share best practices for relationship building implemented in existing peer mentoring and coaching programs for relationship building.
Additionally, we will define work culture and climate, and describe existing knowledge on how these factors influence the well-being of health professionals. We will then explore the role of leaders in promoting work climates which foster joy and mitigate burnout. Finally, we ask participants to work together to create an individual/team/department well-being plan from the perspective of the creating healthy work climates. The session will close with collaborating with others to use tools practiced at the workshop to bring change in workplace at attendees’ home institutions.
