Session
Description: Research in babies is necessary to move the field forward. However, babies participating in research projects are potentially at risk for being subjected to additional pain, over and above that required for their clinical care. In an effort to mitigate this risk, this panel will present data about the adverse impacts of pain in the neonatal period, provide examples of successful reductions of painful interventions in a research project, and address ways to improve research design and evaluation so that babies participating in future research projects have additional protections. Dr. Ruth Grunau will present the evidence regarding the adverse impacts of pain in the newborn on acute physiologic disturbance, brain structure, and long term function. Dr. Sandra Juul will present a real-life example of a major multicenter research project which replaced placebo injections with sham procedures. Dr. Keith Barrington will describe recent research projects that were designed to minimize painful procedures, with comparison to prior studies. Dr. John Lantos will moderate and provide an overview of the ethical issues.
