Session
Description: The NEC Focus Group will explore urgent research priorities for the field of necrotizing enterocolitis. The NEC Society recently brought together a team of diverse stakeholders and built a prioritized research agenda for the NEC community. This session will be facilitated by members of the NEC Society Scientific Advisory Council, with presentations from Dr. Gail Besner who is the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Dr. Aloka Patel who is the Chief of the Division of Neonatology at Rush University, Dr. Ravi M. Patel who is the Director of Neonatal Clinical Research at Emory University, and Jennifer Canvasser who is the founder and executive director of the NEC Society. The NEC Focus Group will highlight four of the highest ranked research priorities including 1) medications and treatments to prevent NEC presented by Dr. Gail Besner, 2) the importance of human milk and lactation support presented by Dr. Aloka Patel, 3) tools for diagnosing NEC presented by Dr. Ravi M. Patel, and 4) the power of patient-family engagement presented by Jennifer Canvasser. The NEC Society recognizes that the risks and consequences of necrotizing enterocolitis span far beyond the gut and the walls of the NICU. Accordingly, the NEC Focus Group should be attended by multidisciplinary specialists across different fields and professions including nephrology, cardiology, nursing, trainees, and anyone aiming to improve overall outcomes for neonates and their families.
