Workshop
Description: Substantial inequities in neonatal health have been described for decades. In response, neonatal health advocates in academic medicine and beyond have prioritized neonatal health equity work. The neonatal health equity field is rapidly growing and evolving to move beyond describing disparities and inequities to actively catalyzing change in several domains. Research, quality improvement, medical education, workforce diversification, policy work, advocacy, and community engagement are all pathways that health equity experts use to promote neonatal equity. Yet, substantial barriers exist to sustained and meaningful change. Importantly, silos between institutions, disciplines, and stakeholders obstruct communication and collaboration of this vital work. Additionally, limited resource allocation, varying institutional support, minority tax, and burnout all contribute. In order to de-silo current efforts, foster national, multi-disciplinary collaboration across sectors, and pool resources, the Neonatal Justice Collaborative (NJC), a grassroots national collaborative dedicated to neonatal equity and justice was formed in 2021. In this workshop, we showcase the work that NJC has done to de-silo neonatal health equity work in the US through its three main subcommittees: 1) research, 2) policy and advocacy; 3) medical education and workforce diversity. Participants will learn the current state of NJC’s national neonatal health equity work, examine barriers to sustained impact of health equity efforts, and actively brainstorm and learn from each other how to tackle potential barriers to removing health equity silos. Participants will leave the workshop with new strategies to leverage local, regional, and national resources to prioritize and de-silo health equity work in their own local contexts.
