Workshop
Description: This immersive workshop will focus on the effective use of questions (a key method in Socratic teaching) to promote learning. Although educators commonly use questions when teaching, very few have been taught the theory and principles of effective use of questions to promote learning. Many learners continue to be exposed to 'pimping', an ineffective form of questioning. In this workshop participants will learn the theory of how questions promote effective learning, the various types of possible questions, how to select the right question based on Bloom's taxonomy, and the right way to pose the questions. Specific techniques for effective questioning will be taught, that include scaffolding, creation of psychological safety, and use of questions to probe and not 'prod'. The workshop will be organized into four sections: (1) Types of questions. To understand this, participants will view a video of a teaching session and identify different types of questions using a worksheet provided by facilitators; (2) Formulating and selecting appropriate questions. Using visual images and a case vignette participants will learn how to select the right level of question for the targeted level of Bloom's taxonomy. (3) How to ask questions. Using role play, participants will learn effective use of body language, tone of voice, demeanor, and relational skills. Following this workshop, participants will be able to apply questioning effectively in teaching and serve as a role model to fellow clinicians and educators. This workshop was conducted during PAS 2022, it was well attended and well received.
