Workshop
Description: The last three years witnessed numerous calls for incorporating anti-racism and equity into the medical profession, including education and training, leadership, and the clinical environment. Diversity among medical professionals leads to diverse perspectives, opportunities to build community and a sense of belonging, and improved medical outcomes for patients. Research demonstrates that patients identifying with the same backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences as diverse health professionals are more likely to adopt their recommendations. While ample discussions, workshops, and commentaries about how to increase diversity and inclusion in medicine have been initiated, fewer avenues exist about how to implement anti-racism and equity initiatives into professional practice.
This interactive workshop will encourage participants to explore implementing anti-racism and equity initiatives through an operationalized framework. Workshop facilitators will utilize small group breakout sessions to identify outcomes important to attendees and their institution in professional practice. Facilitators will then familiarize attendees with the Academic Pediatric Association’s Anti-Racism and Equity Toolkit, including how to effectively navigate each component. Finally, through small group interactions and large group sharing, attendees will apply knowledge learned from the workshop to develop an action plan for utilizing the toolkit to accomplish their desired outcomes. The workshop will provide a roadmap for implementing anti-racism and equity initiatives in professional practice.
