Workshop
Description: The challenges of today’s VUCA world (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) in academic healthcare requires leaders to engage in conversations that go beyond transactional discussions. The past three years during which we experienced the pandemic, continual “pivoting”, rapid adaptation to change, and racial and civic unrest, have required deeper conversations. Leaders need to engage with inquiry-based questions using their authentic voice and feel confident creating meaningful connection with others. Often, as leaders, we feel uncomfortable and unprepared speaking with others about wellbeing, life balance, challenges they may be encountering, career development, competing priorities, and other thought-provoking topics. How can we use empowering questions to relate with our colleagues in a genuine manner?
During this workshop, we will differentiate communication styles to emphasize meaningful relational versus transactional conversations. We will discuss the importance of using an authentic voice and the barriers to finding and/or using your authentic voice. In addition, the use of inquiry will be emphasized and practiced to prepare participants to engage in complex and deeper conversations.
Through self-reflection, small group discussions, pair-share practicing, large group debriefings, and demonstrations, participants will discover, explore, and practice their authentic voices, using inquiry and listening to foster collaborative conversations. Participants will leave with a set of questions they have developed for their use after the session to engage in meaningful conversations within their own personal and professional settings as a leader. Facilitators and participants will partner to identify strategies to promote successful implementation of these resources at their home institution.
