Workshop
Description: For the past decade, payers and policy makers have embraced transitioning from exclusive fee-for-service payments to alternative “value-based” payment models that reward improved patient outcomes, reduced cost, and patient perceptions of improved quality of life and greater satisfaction with care. Until payers and providers agree upon a robust and generalizable overall model, more payment structures now incorporate one or more “value-based” payment components. Because many of these models are designed in consideration of adult practice and adult chronic disease management, pediatricians often find themselves struggling to understand how these changes may impact their clinical practice. In this workshop, we will describe the rapidly changing landscape of alternative payment models in public and commercial insurance plans, highlight ways in which new payment models affect pediatric practice (particularly in the academic setting) and work with participants to develop a concrete action plan for local advocacy and practice transformation to adapt to the changing payment landscape.
