Workshop
Description: The landmark adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) study highlighted the importance of childhood experiences in development and adult health outcomes. Advancing science has revealed that positive childhood experiences (PCEs) are important in determining health outcomes because they can mitigate the effects of ACEs on health outcomes. Children and youth benefit from access to healthy relationships, safe and equitable environments, community engagement, and opportunities for emotional growth. This workshop builds on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) work with academic detailers and pediatric clinicians across the country to incorporate assessment and promotion of PCEs into their clinical practices. Workshop participants will: (1) learn about research surrounding the relationship between ACEs, PCEs, childhood development and health outcomes; (2) be introduced to the Healthy Outcomes for Positive Experiences framework which consists of building blocks for optimal development; (3) discuss how to incorporate assessment and prevention of ACEs and promotion of PCEs into pediatric practice; (4) brainstorm ways to further incorporate ACEs, PCEs, and the HOPE framework into training and practice; and (5) develop a plan for training or practice improvement.
