Session
Description: Examining Reproductive Rights, Gender Affirming Care and STI Prevention and Treatment Through An Intersectional Lens. Healthcare professionals must begin to address the social and medical injustices suffered by the patients we serve. It is imperative that we understand how intersectionality, a concept explaining the social, cultural, economic, political, and medical inequalities people experience due to their multitude of intimate and overlapping identities, can play a role in our patient’s health. In this collaborative session, the Race in Medicine and LGBTQ+ Health and Well-being Special Interest Groups welcome national experts on pressing and unique issues disproportionately impacting minoritized youth at the intersection of race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and class. By highlighting a PAS 2023 theme - The Impact of Policies on Health and Research - we will explore how federal and state policies addressing reproductive health, gender affirming care, and STI prevention and treatment directly impacts the health and wellbeing of sexual and gender diverse youth, with disproportionate impacts among those who are racially minoritized and from lower income households and communities. To educate us, planned speakers include Dr. Elizabeth Miller from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Maria Trent from Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dr. Renata Sanders from Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Dr. Nadia Dowshen from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Further, we will welcome policy experts to give us an overview of key legislation that impacts children and adolescents at the intersection of race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and class. This session will include didactic sessions (90 mins), speaker's panels (60 mins), and interactive activities (30 mins).
