Session
Description: Promoting Early Literacy and Language Development in Multilingual Families: Research, Practice and PolicyNOTE: The joint session (90 minutes) will be followed by individual SIG meetings (45 minutes each)
This joint session from the Literacy Development Programs in Primary Care and The Latino Child Health Research SIG’s will cover research, practice and policy on multilingualism in US children. This topic is ultimately about equity--promoting optimal development for all children, removing ill-conceived barriers to relational health (e.g. parent being told to speak in English with their baby instead of using home language), identifying children who may have a language delay, promoting pediatric research on multilingualism, and advocating that all stakeholders (parents, doctors, teachers, policymakers) have the most up to date information to be able to provide the best care for multilingual children.
For the individual SIG meetings each group will have their regular activities.
Literacy Development SIG will include the YIA presentations, updates from the network, succession planning and time for open discussion.
Latino Research SIG will include an open call for co-chair position, discussion about quarterly activities, and networking.
All are welcome to attend both.
