Session
Description: Health Literacy and Nutrition SIGs "Do you struggle with identifying patients/families with food insecurity and educating them on how to use available resources to maintain a healthy diet?" “Do you find it difficult to communicate with families from different cultures about healthy eating?” If yes, join the Health Literacy and Nutrition SIGs at PAS 2023 for a combined interactive workshop that will delve deeper into the intersection between food insecurity and health literacy.
After an interactive and lightly competitive game to kick off the session, we will reflect on how food insecurity has affected our patients by sharing real-life patient experiences. We will then transition to our featured speaker, Kofi Essel MD, a local pediatric food insecurity expert, who will present a dynamic talk about communicating with families about food security and resources. Workshop participants will then have an opportunity to further their learning by putting themselves in their patients’ shoes. We will simulate a shopping experience and challenge participants to create a healthy meal plan on a limited budget. They will then practice using their newly acquired knowledge and skills - by evaluating written materials on food insecurity and healthy eating education using a health literacy lens. We will conclude the session with Works in Progress and Abstract Presentations followed by some time allocated to SIG business. Faculty, fellows and all level of learners are welcome!
