Description: Combined Global Health and Injury Control SIG: How policy and research lead to innovation to prevent road traffic injuriesThe global emphasis on reductions in childhood mortality and meeting the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) has resulted in significant gains in reducing childhood deaths around the world. However, an epidemiologic shift has been noted, with declining mortality from infection and poor nutrition and relative increases in deaths from injury. Trauma constitutes a major cause of death and disability globally. About 95% of the almost 6 million deaths each year occur in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), and roughly 1 million of these deaths are among children. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the top five etiologies for unintentional injuries are road traffic accidents, falls, burns, drowning and poisoning.
This year at PAS, the Global Health and Injury Control SIGs are bringing together some of the world’s leading experts in the field of road traffic injury prevention to discuss innovative approaches to decrease the burden of death and life-altering injuries in children worldwide. Our speakers will address how research can inform policy and how policy can affect change, both here in the United States as well as around the world.
