Session
Description: How do we teach advocacy skills to our peers and trainees? How do we leverage existing resources to make climate advocacy work also contribute to academic productivity? In this interactive workshop, a collaboration between the Advocacy SIG and the Environmental Health, Climate Change and Sustainability SIG, we will demonstrate how academic physicians can apply their passion for climate advocacy as scholarly work. We will provide discussion by experts who have been advocates through teaching, legislative advocacy (community level and state/federal level), and media outreach. In short presentations the presenters will highlight:
• Teaching resources on climate and health that are already available to the audience as well as guidance on how to efficiently utilize the resources
• Ideas for documenting our advocacy work
• Success stories from national climate policy advocates
• Practical advice on media outreach, whether this is speaking to news outlets or writing an Op/Ed
Small group discussions will allow attendees to discuss their area of choice with the experienced faculty. Audience members will leave the workshop with improved understanding of how to utilize advocacy in a professional, academic setting whether by individual action, mentorship or training future physician advocates.
